Ugandan troops rescue dozens of women and children
Scores of abducted women and children have been rescued after being held hostage by Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army rebels. The 45 hostages were freed in clashes with rebel groups in remote Congolese forests. The LRA is accused of war crimes by the International Criminal Court in The Hague. It is accused of murder, sexual slavery and using child soldiers.
Israel and Hamas agree to extend ceasefire by five days
Israel and Hamas have agreed to extend a 72-hour truce by five days. There were fears that talks to extend the truce would collapse after rockets were fired on Israel from the Gaza Strip shortly before the 72-hour ceasefire was to end. No new casualties have been reported in the conflict that has claimed almost 2000 lives, mostly Palestinians.
Five bodies recovered from Mont Blanc disaster
Five of a group of French climbers trapped by bad weather while trying to reach Aiguille d’Argentière in the French Alps have been found dead. A sixth climber is missing. The alarm was raised on Tuesday when the group failed to reach their destination. A party of mountain police found the bodies on Wednesday. – Taylor Yates
