The Newsroom previews the teams of the 2015 Cricket World Cup. Today, Zimbabwe.
Pool B: India, Ireland, Pakistan, South Africa, West Indies, UAE, Zimbabwe
Embattled World Cup hopefuls Zimbabwe are hoping to reverse their misplaced fortunes at this year’s tournament.
The team: The one shining light in Zimbabwe’s team is the experience of new coach, Dav Whatmore.
Whatmore was the man with the Midas touch when he coached Sri Lanka to international stardom in 1996 by winning the World Cup.
However, the Australian seems to have his work cut out for him as he tries to turn the lacklustre Zimbabwe outfit into a formidable unit.
Unfortunately they had a poor 2014, losing five tests and three One Day Internationals to Bangladesh, so they need to be resurrected if they are to be competitive this month. Whatmore wants to work on strategy, with it being his most pressing priority.
The team’s 5-nil whitewash in Bangladesh has left the team shattered. However Zimbabwe should take heart from single victories against New Zealand, Pakistan and Australia in recent years.
What seems most apparent is the need to regain their confidence, and the World Cup could be just the setting for Zimbabwe to shine.
Player to watch: The danger men with the bat will be Brendan Taylor and captain Elton Chigumbura. Sean Williams is expected to go out and have a bit of a hit on the middle order and he will definitely be one to watch.
Paceman Tinashe Panyangara is expected to fire up the fast ones. Prosper Utseya may be a danger man bowling his off breaks, but his controversial bowling action was banned by authorities. Nevertheless, he has been recalled for the squad, but it would seem this is on the presumption he changes his technique and bowls medium pace.
Prediction: Eliminated in group stage – Joseph Walz
