Wallabies head coach Michael Cheika has made seven changes to the Wallabies side for this week’s Rugby Championship against Argentina in Mendoza.
Only eight players have retained their starting spots, with Scott Higginbotham, James Horwill and Drew Mitchell being dumped from last week’s squad, who came from behind to defeat South Africa. Will Genia, Matt Giteau and Rob Horne will also miss the clash due to injury.
Cheika is using the match as an opportunity for his players to make an impact to push for starting selection in the upcoming Bledisloe Cup.
“We are fortunate with the level of depth in the squad to be able to cover for the injuries we sustained last Saturday night against the Springboks,” Cheika said.
“They all deserve their start against Los Pumas and they now have an opportunity to build on the performance last week and stake their claims.”
The Wallabies will be boosted in the forwards, with the inclusions of Greg Holmes, Ben McCalman and David Pocock. Waratahs pair Nick Phipps and Bernard Foley will run out on Saturday in place of the injured Genia and Quade Cooper, who will start on the bench.
“We have two fine playmakers in Quade and Bernard,” Cheika said.
“Both players can make an enormous impact in our team.”
Cooper will lead an experienced bench, including 49-capped veteran Kurtley Beale and hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau.
“We know Argentina will provide a physical challenge in this match, and our reserves will have a significant role to play,” Cheika said.
“Last week they (the bench) got us home against the Springboks, and I will be looking forward to an even a greater impact from our players entering the game this weekend.” —Jackson Barron.
