A group of British SAS soldiers are also residing in the area to gather intelligence, British officials have said.
Extremist fighters from the IS kidnapped more than a 100 Yazidi women and children last week, and many of the men were killed. The militants have taken the abductees to Mosul, a city controlled by the IS. They plan to sell or marry the women off to soldiers officials have said. The women, most of who are under the age of 35, are being held in a school in Mosul.
Thousands of Yazidi’s, a group deemed heretical by IS, were displaced last month as IS took over northern Iraq.
