Sydney’s Anzac Day march is steeped in tradition but this year it will take a slightly different turn due to construction of the light rail project.
The start time of 9 o’clock and the order of the march has not been altered, but the starting position will now be the intersection of Martin Place and Elizabeth Street, continuing south towards Liverpool Street where the participants will disperse.
Eastern Suburbs Legion Club manager David Byrn welcomed the changes to the route “as long as it does not impact the veterans marching”.
He said his club was proud to participate in the annual commerorative event.
“At this club we only have around 40 ex-service personnel left with only two or three taking place in the march,” he told The Newsroom.
“They will also participating in a small march at Bronte Beach later in the day.”
There are no changes to the Dawn and Dusk services – still being held at the Cenotaph in Martin Place. RSLNSW has made one small change to the day in that the Act of Remembrance will now be held as the veterans march past the Anzac memorial in Hyde Park.
The commemoration service is being held at the memorial, starting at the usual time, 12.30pm, and will include the customary music performances from the Police Concert Band and Scots College’s Massed Pipe Band.
There will no support for veterans from the traditional Land-Rover motorcade in 2016; the organisers have opted instead for taxis, wheelchairs and a reserved seating option for veterans who cannot take part in the march.
