Now that the top 10 picks of the NBA draft have been selected, let’s compare to the Newsroom’s mock draft.
#1 – Cleveland Cavaliers
PREDICTION: Andrew Wiggins ACTUAL PICK: Andrew Wiggins – What a start. The Cavaliers did exactly what they should’ve done and managed to pick the best player available. Wiggins will have an immediate impact on the team and can also help lure Lebron James back to town.
#2 – Milwaukee Bucks PREDICTION: Jabari Parker ACTUAL PICK: Jabari Parker – This was the easiest pick of the draft. Jabari is referred to as the most NBA-ready player in the draft and he will be a huge upgrade for the Bucks. There was no doubt about this pick.
#3 – Philadelphia 76ers PREDICTION: Dante Exum ACTUAL PICK: Joel Embiid – With Embiid injuring himself last week, he should’ve fallen down some draft boards. Obviously the 76ers were ecstatic when he was still on the board at number three and that is why they decided to pick him here. Great selection and it helps them pair him up with Nerlens Noel in the front court.
#4 – Orlando Magic PREDICTION: Marcus Smart ACTUAL PICK: Aaron Gordon – The Magic came out with the first surprise of the draft. I saw Dante Exum getting picked here but Aaron Gordon must have cast a spell upon the Magic organisation that helped make him seem like a desirable pick.
#5 – Utah Jazz PREDICTION: Noah Vonleh ACTUAL PICK: Dante Exum – This wasn’t so surprising. Reports had come out just hours before the draft that Noah Vonleh was falling off teams draft boards. With Aussie phenom Dante Exum still sitting there, the Jazz made a move and now have a great young guard pairing with Dante Exum and Trey Burke.
#6 – Boston Celtics PREDICTION: Joel Embiid ACTUAL PICK: Marcus Smart – The Celtics would have been extremely lucky for Joel Embiid to fall to them at number six. Obviously that didn’t happen so they picked the best player available: Oklahoma State guard Marcus Smart. Even though Smart had some red flags coming into the draft, the Celtics obviously found him desirable enough to draft him.
#7 – Los Angeles Lakers PREDICTION: Aaron Gordon ACTUAL PICK: Julius Randle – No trades were made during the top 10 picks which was extremely surprising to me. I saw LA trying to move forward to select either Marcus Smart or Dante Exum but obviously they knew what they were doing. Julius Randle was an absolute steal at this point in the draft and the LA organisation are going to be very excited about this pick.
#8 – Sacramento Kings PREDICTION: Julius Randle ACTUAL PICK: Nick Stauskas – The Kings were in a prime position to get the steal of the draft but just missed out. Stauskas had been rising up draft boards over the last couple of weeks and it was not a surprise he managed to crack the top 10.
#9 – Charlotte Hornets PREDICTION: Gary Harris ACTUAL PICK: Noah Vonleh – The Hornets were the winners of the Vonleh fall. Most NBA mock drafts, mine included, had Vonleh going in the top five but obviously teams just didn’t find him desirable enough. The Hornets get an A+ rating for this pick – what an absolute steal!
#10 – Philadelphia 76ers PREDICTION: Doug McDermott ACTUAL PICK: Elfrid Payton – This pick was interesting at the time but it has since been void. The 76ers traded Payton to the Orlando Magic for their 12th pick Dario Saric. This trade looks like a win-win for both teams involved.
The Orlando Magics pick at number five managed to shake up the entire draft. My mock draft was looking good… that was until the draft actual started. The Hornets get my vote for the best pick in the top 10 with their selection of the falling Noah Vonleh, and the Magic get my vote for the biggest reach in the top 10 with their selection of Aaron Gordon. – Lachlan Brunton
