New South Wales’ best hotel burger was revealed last night and but Sydney foodies will need to drive two hours to taste it.
The Australian Hotel Association named Newcastle’s The Lucky Hotel as the burger with the lot, beating over 100 hotels statewide.
Hayley McCloy, who co-owns The Lucky with her sister Blake, said she was humbled by the win, but the pair knew their burger set them apart from the rest.
“We are so surprised as we were up against so many amazing hotels in Sydney, we were just honoured to be a finalist in that category, let alone actually win,” Ms McCloy told The Newsroom.
“In terms of our burger, the quality and the uniqueness of it is really hard to beat and that’s why we’ve got so many locals and people coming up from Sydney and Melbourne just to taste it, so it’s certainly well deserved.”
Ms McCloy said the secret to her winning burger was the smoking process. Beef brisket is smoked for 12 hours in a “top of the range” oven imported from America, which creates a “melt-in-your-mouth” moment from the first bite. She said the simplicity of the burger was the key to its success, containing just two ingredients – beef brisket and onion on a brioche bun.
The sisters were still on a high this morning after The Lucky also took out best new redevelopment of a hotel, best deluxe pub-style accommodation, best single hotel operator and best overall hotel of the year. Their aim is now to see the hotel progress from state to nationwide recognition. – Charmaine Perry
