The entire east coast of Australia was smashed by the huge swells of the beautiful brawn of Cyclone Lusi last week. For us in Sydney it was a waiting game as social media became clogged by the surfing world waxing ecstatic about Lusi’s waves. The pictures complementing the posts were a tease as the swell caressed the shores of Queensland first, then the mid-north coast and then finally, late on Sunday afternoon, it was our turn to see Lusi at her rawest.
The power of this “ground swell” (a swell that has travelled hundreds of kilometres) attracted surfers like moths to a flame. Some came scarred but wiser; some emerged from the surf grinning ear to ear, telling stories of triumph.
