Australia’s Matildas football team have smashed Zimbabwe 6-1 to finish third in Group F and sneak into the quarter finals.
After a 2-0 loss to Canada and a 2-2 draw with Germany, the Aussies recovered to put on a stellar performance against the Zimbabweans.
Lisa De Vanna opened the scoring for the Aussies tapping one in from 12 yards out in the second minute. Claire Polkinghorne doubled the advantage from close range, before fellow defender Alanna Kennedy found the net with a simple header from the corner to extend the half-time lead to 3-0.
The second half kicked off as the first began, with Kyah Simon running into space to steer Steph Catley’s through ball past the keeper. Michelle Heyman was thrust into action as a replacement for Katrina Gorry and managed to score a quick double with a header in the 55th minute, before slotting home the sixth in the 66th minute. Zimbabwe managed a late consolation goal through Msipa Emmalulate in added time.
Australia will play either USA or Brazil in their quarter final on Saturday. Australia’s final match before the Olympics was a 3-1 loss to Brazil in a friendly match. Their last match against the USA was also a 3-1 loss, in last year’s Women’s World Cup. – Patrick Staveley
