The Australian Boomers have lost the bronze medal match to Spain 89-88 despite 30 points from Spurs star Patty Mills.
With Spain’s final play of the game, they decided to drive to the basket and look to get a close shot away but Mills gave away a foul in the process, giving Spain two free throws and giving them the win by one point. Australia got the ball back for another 5.4 seconds but couldn’t produce any magic to take home the bronze.
Frustratingly for Australia, it is the fourth time that they have lost a bronze medal match and still have no Olympic medal to show for their efforts in basketball.
USA win gold for third consecutive time
After winning the gold medal in Bejing 2008 and London 2012, Team USA have made it three in a row after beating Serbia 96-66.
In the 30 point demolition of Serbia, Kevin Durant was the standout performer, scoring 30 points for himself.
The win for Team USA means they now have a 25-game unbeaten streak at the Olympics and has everyone questioning if anyone can stop them.
The Boomers came close and Serbia shook them the first time around but neither of the sides could end up beating the ‘Dream Team’.
It is Team USA’s sixth gold medal from their past seven Olympics and if they are to be challenged for the gold in four years time, it’ll take some sheer skill and determination to do so. – Jarvis Small
