A balmy summers evening, a good flick and a picnic. What more could you want?
Sometimes, after a big news week we just want to relax with a good movie. So last Friday night, that’s exactly what The Newsroom team did when we headed to Sydney University’s Cadigal Green where Ben & Jerry’s openair cinema is set up for summer.
In the heart of the uni grounds sits a massive blow-up movie screen, with bean bag chairs and beach chairs, a stage and DJ decks, and a few food and drink venues strategically placed around it. Yes, it’s enough to provide you with the perfect night out, whether you’re a group of friends like us, on a date or with your family.
There are options for all different budget types to provide everyone with the perfect night. You can bring your own picnic blanket, or hire a bean bag chair for $19 (when you book online) or $24 (if you buy a ticket at the gate) but these chairs aren’t reserved so if you want good seats you’ll need to get in early.
But if it’s luxury you’re after, try the Star Lounge option ($37 online or $42 at the gates.) The Star Lounge provides you with everything you need, from high quality, reserved, bean bag chairs, a cosy warm blanket in case it gets chilly, wait staff to bring whatever you need to you so you don’t have to lift a finger and side tables to put all your food and drinks on. Oh, and a free glass of Giesen wine or non-alcoholic beverage!
In terms of food and drinks available, there’s a lot of choice. First of all, you will receive a free Aperol Spriz on arrival, with a rich bitter taste of orange and undertones of rhubarb and vanilla, it makes for an interesting cocktail.
While there is food available such as Rocketboy Pizzas, freshly made salads, popcorn, chips, chocolates and sweets making for the perfect all round movie snack selection, it’s a good idea to either get in early to avoid a queue and therefore the beginning of the film, or bring your own picnic.
We decided to get in early and get a pizza. We chose the pasture fed organic lamb meatballs, grilled marinated eggplant, cherry tomato, garlic & feta topped with Moroccan spices and fresh parsley for $18, which had more flavours than our mouths could handle and was definitely delicious.
Whatever you do for your main, you must get dessert there, which will obviously be Ben & Jerry’s! We bought three of the 120ml tubs of ice cream ($4 each) so we could each try a different flavour: Cotton Candy, Brown Sugar Blondie and Coffee Blast. Definitely a feast perfect for a movie. Or if you’re after a bigger scoop or sharing, buy a 458ml tub of Phish Food, Chubby Hubby, Half Baked, or the iconic Save Our Swirled flavour for $12.
Given there’s a new movie playing each night of the week until December 12, you could make a trip here a weekly event because, as Marketing Manager Sarah Steel says, “We’ve got the perfect combination of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream on a summers night with a movie under the stars… There’s no better way to spend the evening.”
