The FBI has confirmed the Boston Marathon bomber used pressure cookers to build the murderous devices.
The agent in charge of the investigation, Richard DesLauriers said pieces of pressure cooker were found at the scene of Monday’s attack, along with shards of metal, lead pellets, nails and fragments of black nylon that could have been a backpack housing one of the devices.
Police and the FBI have appealed for all photos and videos of the Marathon day to be submitted to police as they search for evidence that may identify the culprits.
The bombs killed three people, including an 8-year-old, and injured at least 176 people near the finish line.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and the FBI concedes that the range of suspects is “wide open”. “Our investigation is in its infancy,’’ DesLauriers said.
President Barack Obama said the bombing was a “heinous and cowardly act of terrorism”.
“What we don’t yet know, however, is who carried out this attack or why,” Obama said at the White House. “Whether it was planned and executed by a terrorist organisation, foreign or domestic, or was the act of a malevolent individual.” – Report compiled by Kaycee Jane Shingles-Moore
