The Newsroom recaps the weekend action in the English Premier League.
Rashford helps United defeat Arsenal
Teenager Marcus Rashford scored twice and assisted another to give Manchester United a 3-2 win over Arsenal at Old Trafford. Rashford, who also scored twice on his debut against FC Midtjylland on Thursday, steered in a loose ball for the opener before scoring again just three minutes later. Danny Welbeck pulled one back for the Gunners just before the break but that was negated when Rashford picked out Ander Herrera for United’s third. Mesut Ozil’s volley gave Arsenal hope but Louis van Gaal’s men held on for the three points. Arsenal now trails league leader Leicester City by 5 points.
Chelsea come from behind to sink Southampton
Chelsea moved up the table to 11th after defeating Southampton 2-1 thanks to a late headed goal from Branislav Ivanovic. Shane Long scored the opener for the Saints on half-time and his side held the lead until Chelsea equalised in the 75th minute through Cesc Fàbregas. The game looked set for a draw before Ivanovic scored off a Willian corner to snatch the three points just two minutes from the final whistle. It was the reigning champions first back-to-back win since May 2015.
Spurs move within two points of league leaders
Tottenham are just two points behind league leaders Leicester City after overcoming an impressive Swansea side 2-1 at White Hart Lane. Alberto Paloschi gave the visitors the lead after Angel Rangel’s shot fell to him through team-mate Jack Cork. Swansea goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski performed well making superb saves throughout the match but was unable to deny Nacer Chadli’s deflected equaliser. Danny Rose then took advantage of a loose ball and drove home the winner when Swansea failed to clear a corner. – Anthony Johnston
