“The Man” Mundine – hellbent on redemption.
We have a date. The long-awaited title fight rematch between Australia’s top boxers, Anthony “The Man” Mundine and Daniel “The Real Deal” Geale, will be held at the Sydney Entertainment Centre on Wednesday, January 13.
After months of heated talk between the two over bloodlines and backgrounds, the hype surrounding the rematch continues to grow, so get ready to view one of Australia’s greatest boxing rivalries unleashed come January.
Boxing promoter Gary Shaw described it as “the biggest fight in Australian boxing history”.
Not since Mundine defeated Danny Green in 2006 at the same venue has a bigger fight between two Australian boxers been scheduled.
“This is a once in a lifetime fight that will captivate not only fans in Sydney, but across Australia and the rest of the world.” Shaw said.
Current IBF and WBA middleweight world champion Geale will be looking to rectify his controversial split decision loss to “The Man” back in 2009, and what better place to do it than in front of a home crowd. Since that first and only professional loss, Geale has gone on to become one of the hottest names in world boxing; a win against Mundine will cement his title as Austalia’s best current boxer.
“Everyone is aware of the intense rivalry between the pair and it promises to be an adrenaline-charged match between two great champions,” the Minister for Sport and Recreation, Graham Annesley, said.
Both Geale and Mundine have praised the support of the NSW Government for bringing such a big fight to their home country and the city of Sydney. “I’d like to thank Destination NSW for their assistance in ensuring this fight remains in Sydney and look forward to putting on a show for everyone to see on January 30,” Mundine said at this morning’s announcement.
The Minister for Tourism and Major Events, George Souris, also welcomed the news that the fight would be staged in Sydney, with the prospects of a large crowd sure to generate some cash flow for NSW.
“Today’s announcement reinforces Sydney’s position as a global events city, with the NSW sports events calendar fast becoming the benchmark for other states,” he said. “The IBF world middleweight title fight between Anthony Mundine and Daniel Geale is expected to draw more than 2000 interstate visitors and generate almost $4 million in overnight visitor expenditure.”
The stage is set. We have Australia’s current top fighter and dual world champion, Daniel Geale, in one corner, versus the self-proclaimed superstar and former world champion Anthony Mundine in the other. With a date set, both fighters will be in full training for the fight. Be sure to mark January 13 down in your sporting calendar. – Patrick Higgins
