Gold Coast Suns captain Gary Ablett Jnr has continued an explosive off-season for the AFL, requesting a trade back to his hometown team, the Geelong Cats.
The Suns refused to trade him while he is under contract, which is still active for another three years. It is unknown yet whether he will still be captain of the club in the 2017 season.
The Head of Football at Geelong, Steve Hocking, said the Suns played hardball from the start – and told Ablett Jnr in no uncertain terms he would be seeing out his contract at the Gold Coast.
“Gold Coast was very clear on the fact he was their player and will continue to be their player,” Hocking told News Corp.
“He had just signed a three-year deal earlier in the year.
“They were very clear on that and shut it down very quickly to Gary,” said Hocking.
The Suns will be trying their hardest to ensure another star player doesn’t exit the club, as Dion Prestia and Jaeger O’Meara famously left through this season’s trade period.
