Australia’s Sally Fitzgibbons is into the semi-finals of the sixth leg of the World Surf League tour at Huntington Beach in the USA.
Fitzgibbons defeated Victorian surfer Nikki Van Dijk to reach the final four and will take on the new world number one Courtney Conlogue on Sunday morning.
Fitzgibbons is still feeling the effects of a perforated eardrum she suffered in the last event in Fiji in June, taking extreme precautions to prevent any further damage. She is wearing earplugs, blu-tac, a headband, strapping tape and a helmet to stop water enterimng her left ear.
“It’s been really tough getting used to all the gear on your head because you can’t actually hear and it’s a little disorienting,” Fitzgibbons said. “Obviously you’ve got the throbbing pain and it’s pushing right on your temple so there’s things to get used to, but as long as I’m in the water I’m super happy. I’m just trying to keep moving forward and to make the best of my situation.”
