The Bundeena RSL Club in Sydney’s south suffered major damage when a fire broke out last night.
Emergency services arrived at the club at about 1:50am in response to multiple emergency calls.
Crews managed to bring the fire under control within an hour but were not able to put it out until 4:45am.
Superintendent Ian Krimmer of Fire and Rescue NSW said crews restricted the extent of the fire. There was severe damage in the kitchen, office area and roof but it was not clear where it started.
All fire crew members were assessed by paramedics and given the okay, Mr Krimmer told the Newsroom.
One local resident was treated at the scene by paramedics for smoke inhalation.
Most of the club’s memorabilia was saved by crews forming a human chain to pass the items out of danger.
Police are continuing their investigation and urge anyone who may have information or may have seen suspicious behaviour in the area to contact Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000. – Erin Kenneally
