The Round of 32 of the FFA Cup continued last night with Western Sydney and Melbourne City securing victories after Green Gully stunned the Mariners.
New signing Blake Powell opened the scoring for the Mariners eight minutes in before striker Liam Boland scored a controversial equaliser for the Victorian side, Green Gully, in the 86th minute. Initially claimed by captain Daniel Jones, his shot was nicked in by Boland from an offside position. This provoked an uproar from the Mariners faithful who felt as though they were robbed. Boland then struck again in added time, as he chipped Mariners goalkeeper Ivan Necevski from long-range.
Melbourne City survived a scare from Perth outfit Floreat Athena. Nick Fitzgerald’s driven strike gave City a halftime lead. Kris Gate drew the scores level before an Anthony Caceres stunner restored the lead in the 65th minute before they held on to win 2-1.
Western Sydney Wanderers came from 2-0 down in Campbelltown to win 3-2 over the Wellington Phoenix. Goals to Hamish Watson and star recruit Kosta Barbarouses were crossed out with a double to debutant Lachlan Scott before a long-range belter Mitch Nichols won the match.
Tied at two-all, South Australia’s North-East Metro Stars and Victoria’s Bentleigh Greens scored one more each in extra time before 2014 semi-finalists, the Bentleigh Greens prevailed on penalties. – Patrick Staveley
