Dante Exum could miss the entire 2015-2016 NBA season due to a knee injury sustained while playing for the Australian basketball team.
Exum ruptured a ligament in his left-knee competing in an exhibition game in the Australian team’s European tour against hosts Slovenia. The injury means he will miss the Olympic qualifiers in New Zealand this month, and potentially the entire NBA season with his team, Utah Jazz.
Trainers had to help Exum leave the court in Slovenia after a jump shot saw him land in an unorthodox manner and he did not return for the final quarter.
However teammates Joe Ingles, said the point guard’s injury won’t keep him out of the Olympics.
“He was excited to go and play for the Boomers again and get ready for this [Rio Olympics], but really it’s disappointing because he is a great kid and works extremely hard,” Ingles said.
“I think it’s a realistic possibility that Rio could be his first tournament back if it is an ACL”.
“Injuries like that are a freak thing. He didn’t do anything crazy. He jumped, he landed and that was it. It wasn’t like he was out paragliding and landed on his knee,” said Ingles. − Joseph Walz
