ACT considers electronic E-Cigarette crack down
The government has released a description paper on whether E-cigarettes should be restricted. The paper reveals new plans from public submissions on new regulations, including banning the sale of E-cigarettes to minors, restricting advertising and ensuring they are only used in areas designated for smoking. Chief minister Katy Gallagher said, “the fact that they are being targeted and marketed like cigarettes, in that you put them up to your mouth and hold them in your hands like cigarettes, certainly starts a behaviour going that smoking or fake smoking is okay.” Earlier this year, the World Health Organisation called for stern regulation on E-cigarettes.
Asbestos discovered in a Sydney metropolitan hospital
Workers have developed mesothelioma after asbestos exposure in a Sydney hospital. A former secretary at Sydney’s Concord hospital, Ryan Mills, has developed asbestos cancer and warns that asbestos is a danger to hospital staff and not just those who work in construction or maintenance. Mr Mills said he was shocked when he was informed by his doctor. “I had no idea that that could be a possibility for somebody who largely spent his time in offices doing managerial things,” he said. – Memu Conteh
