The Newsroom recaps the Manchester City v. Liverpool FC Capital One Cup final at Wembley Stadium.
Manchester City have been crowned Capital One Cup champions, following their penalty shootout victory over Liverpool FC at Wembley Stadium.
Willy Caballero was the hero for Manchester City after making three decisive saves in the shootout denying Lucas Leiva, Philippe Coutinho, and Adam Lallana. This comes after City manager Manuel Pellegrini opted to drop first-choice goalkeeper Joe Hart for the 34-year-old Argentinian.
Fernandinho put City in front just after halftime by gliding the ball past Simon Mignolet, who was otherwise Liverpool’s best player on the night. Two glaring misses from former Liverpool forward Raheem Sterling proved pivotal and allowed the Reds to equalise through Philippe Coutinho on the 83rd minute.
In the shootout, goalscorer Fernandinho hit the post with City’s first kick, but Jesús Navas and Sergio Agüero were able to convert their spot kicks as Willy Caballero made three crucial saves, allowing Yaya Touré to score the cup-winning penalty.
Manchester City have now been crowned League Cup champions four times, whilst Liverpool have lost a League Cup final for the fourth time.
