England and Italy were both held in their World Cup warm-ups against lower ranked opponents this week.
Goals from Wayne Rooney and Liverpool signing Rickie Lambert weren’t enough to give England a win over Ecuador. The game ended in a 2-2 draw. Both sides finished with 10 men after red cards were given to England’s Raheem Sterling and Ecuador’s captain, Antonio Valencia.
Roy Hodgson’s experimental side featured young players such as Ross Barkley and Luke Shaw.
A full strength Italy were also held to a 1-1 draw against 112th-ranked Luxembourg in Verona after Claudio Marchisio’s ninth minute opener was cancelled out by defender, Maxime Chanot.
In other results, Bosnia and Herzegovina defeated Mexico 1-0, Algeria scored a 2-1 over Romania and the Netherlands and Argentina scored big wins over Wales and Trinidad and Tobago respectively. – Chris Matthews-Darby
