Police have arrested a man from Albion in Melbourne’s west for the murder of 17-year old Masa Vukotic, stabbed to death in a Doncaster park yesterday.
The man, in his late twenties, and whose name is yet to be released, handed himself in to authorities in the Sunshine area around midday and is currently being held by the Melbourne homicide squad.
He is expected to make a formal statement this afternoon about his involvement in the stabbing of the popular Melbourne VCE student.
Inspector Mick Hughes announced in a press conference that the man was previously known to police but in what capacity is currently unknown. According to police, their focus changed this morning after CCTV images of a man boarding a bus in Doncaster shortly after the murder was released to the public.
After the arrest a police spokeman said “there are no other suspects that we’re looking for” and thanked the public for their assistance since the CCTV imagery was released.
At this stage there is no known connection between the victim and the man in custody. The attack appeared to be completely random.
Police say that, even though they have someone in custody for this crime, people still need to be aware of their surroundings and circumstances when walking alone, and to take reasonable precautions. But they assured the public they had no need to live in fear. – Melissah Dierickx-Bosmans
