Holden drivers Will Davison and Jonathan Webb have taken out the Bathurst 1000 car race, coming from 17th position.
Jamie Whincup and Paul Dumbrell led for much of the race in their Red Bull Holden but were behind five laps from the end when Whincup tried to pass Scott McLaughlin but ended up taking out both McLaughlin and Garth Tander.
The race officials slammed a costly penalty of 15 seconds on Whincup, leaving Davison and Webb to win by a whisker from race favourite and fellow Holden driver Shane Van Gisbergen, though they finished more than five seconds behind Whincup. Whincup’s Triple Eight team is believed to be launching a protest against the time penalty.
Eight cars failed to finish, including defending champion Craig Lowndes, whose race ended early when his car suffered a gearbox failure.
At the presentation Davison, riding for the small independent Tekno team, revealed that he ran out of fuel as his car crossed the line.
“I’m honestly speechless. I’m not gonna give much here because that was, like, so stressful. I knew if I lifted to save, like, any more fuel, I knew Shane was gonna be in there. It coughed into the last corner …” he said.
“To do it with such a little team, in Tekno, is just phenomenal. Webby did an amazing job.”
He and Webb followed the trend started by Australian Formula 1 driver Daniel Ricciardo after winning the Malaysian Grand Prix last week by downing a “shoey” to celebrate their victory. – Jesse Mullens
