Just the Tomic, Rory all the rage and feathers fly at Brookvale
McIlroy wins British Open
Rory McIlroy became the third youngest player to win three majors when he triumphed with a final score of 17-under the card at Royal Liverpool on Sunday to win the claret jug. The Northern Irishman went wire-to-wire and held off a stern challenge from Spaniard Sergio Garcia to claim the title. Australians Mark Leishman and world number one Adam Scott finished in a tie for fifth at 12-under par.
Tomic too good in Columbia
Australian bad boy Bernard Tomic claimed his second tour win over the powerful Croat Ivo Karlovic in the final of the Clara Open. The polarising 21-year old, who had previously only triumphed in Sydney, won two tiebreakers to emerge the 7-6 (7-5) 3-6 7-6 (7-4) victor.
Trouble at Brookvale
Manly five-eighth Kieran Foran confirmed what we already knew: there is internal trouble at the table-topping club. After weeks of speculative reports linking Anthony Watmough, Brett Stewart and Steve Matai to moves elsewhere, Foran spoke out about the disharmony between the front office and playing group.
Melbourne City miss Lampard
Former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has quelled rumours that his signature with MLS expansion side New York City will also result in his loan stint with Melbourne City. The recently re-branded A-League club had been heavily linked with Lampard after it was revealed he would be signing with New York. However, spokesperson has said the 36-year old will not make the trip to Victoria to join City’s marquee signing, Spaniard David Villa.
