Todd Carney is threatening legal action against his former NRL club the Cronulla Sharks for unfair dismissal.
This comes after a lewd photograph of him emerged on social media in 2014, at a well-known Cronulla bar. The photo was published throughout many newspapers and all over the internet, and was incredibly embarrassing for Carney and his family.
The photo depicted Todd Carney urinating in his mouth and was famously described as the “bubbler“.
Carney was sacked on the spot by Sharks CEO at the time, Steven Noyce.
A year has gone by and Carney feels he has been unfairly treated and has now put his trust in the courts hands to sort out the whole ordeal. Carney has been playing rugby league in France for the Catalans Dragons for the entire 2015 season. He has recently signed a new three-year-deal with the French club ruling out speculation that Carney will return to the NRL anytime soon.
Carney has had a checkered career starting in 2004. He has been both hot and cold, demonstrating his amazing talent while also seeming to always get in trouble with the law. He had numerous drink driving offences against him, in December, 2006, when he was charged and banned from driving for five years. The NRL has given him a string of chances since he started playing first-grade rugby league.
He also had his contract torn up for disciplinary reasons on August 7 2008 while playing for the Canberra Raiders. However, he found some good fortune when the Roosters gave him a lifeline after playing A-grade football in Townsville in 2009. In 2010 he won the Dally M award and featured in the Grand Final. Carney’s behaviour was still an issue when he was sacked by the Roosters in 2011.
Carney is yet to give any official statement regarding the matter. –Jesse Mullens
