An academic accused of sexism has resigned from University College London (UCL).
Biochemist Tim Hunt, a Nobel laureate and self-described “chauvinist”, caused controversy earlier this week with comments that “girls” cause trouble by making men fall in love with them, and scientists should work in gender-segregated laboratories.
He has since claimed the comments made at the World Conference of Science Journalists in Seoul on Tuesday were meant as a joke; he resigned his honorary professorship at UCL yesterday following an online backlash.
The 72-year-old apologised for causing offence, but said, “[I] did mean the part about having trouble with girls.”
The UCL released a statement confirming the resignation, adding it was “the first university in England to admit women students on equal terms to men, and the university believes that this outcome is compatible with our commitment to gender equality.” – Jake Nelson
