Sydney FC took on Macarthur Rams last night at Campbelltown Stadium as part of a lengthy pre-season preparation that has seen them travel to Japan already. Next they head to Italy where they will play six matches.
Young Chris Naumoff is having a pre-season to remember, scoring five goals in only three games. Coach Frank Farina started with a mixture of youth and experience for the first half with Ivan Necevski, Terry McFlynn and Ali Abbas being the senior players.
Campbelltown’s slippery pitch did not help either side’s attempt to control the pace of the game. It took 15 minutes for Sydney to get a shot on goal when Mitch Mallia had his effort superbly saved by the Rams keeper. The same went for Joel Chianese and Yario Yau, both forcing the keeper into fine saves.
Luke Clifford, Jacob Tratt, Anthony Tomelic, Josh MacDonald and Naumoff came on for the second half. With Sydney’s team leadership off the field the Rams took advantage in the 53rd minute when midfielder Alvaro Malimcera unleashed a bomb from 30 metres out, 1-0 to local team.
The lead didn’t last long for the Rams. Naumoff levelled the score with a delightful chip over the advancing Rams keeper at the 65th minute, a deserved goal for the striker. The last 25 minutes saw both sides waste a handful of chances with the game ending 1-1. – Blake Moretti
