Liberal women call for more members
Female MPs are calling for a rise in female numbers within the Liberal party telling the leadership to stop “toying around”. Howard government minister Teresa Gambaro has called on the Liberal party to back a target of 30 per cent female representation in parliament. “It’s time (political parties) get out of the dark ages,” Ms Gambaro said. “This has been toyed around with for far too long and it can’t be some sort of an issue which is rolled out as an afterthought from time to time to placate women.” This debate follows the ALP conference last week where Labor declared that 50 per cent of their cabinet will be female by 2025.
ANZ to offer free financial advice to bridge the gender gap
The ANZ bank will now offer customers with a superannuation less than $50,000 free financial advice and pay an annual $500 super bonus to their female staff. Paid parental leave will also be paid by the bank for up to 24 months, an extension from the previous 12 month agreement. The new policy is designed to close the gender pay gap where women earn an average of $700,000 less than men over their lifetime. Chief Executive of Global Wealth at ANZ, Joyce Phillips said,”We’re calling out and trying to close this gap – [the initiative] is not perfect, but we’re making progress.” The Greens industrial relations spokesman Adam Bandt said, “On average, women have $44,000 in their super account, compared to $82,000 for men. This is an extreme level of inequality and ANZ is doing the right thing by trying to change this for their employees.”
Road safety awareness campaigns unsuccessful
New data released from the Australian Automobile Association (AAA) shows that the rate of motorcycle fatalities has increased in the past 12 months. NSW has the highest fatality rate with 58 deaths over the past year. The latest quarterly report obtained exclusively by News Corp shows motorbike rider deaths have increased by 3.2 per cent compared to the same quarter last year. With 201 motorcycle road fatalities in the past 12 months, CEO of AAA Michael Bradley said, “This is a stark reminder of the need to take care on the roads and be extra vigilant of vulnerable road users such as motorbike riders and cyclists.”
