A Lebanese court may downgrade kidnapping-related charges against a team of Channel Nine journalists over a failed child abduction stunt in Beirut.
The team, including presenter Tara Brown, producer Stephen Rice, cameraman Ben Williamson and sound recordist David Ballment, were arrested over an unsuccessful attempt to take the children of Australian mother Sally Faulkner off the streets.
Charges against the team from 60 Minutes and Ms Faulkner include hiding information, kidnapping, physical assault and planning with two or more people to commit a crime.
Ms Faulkner’s ex-husband Ali El-Amien, does not wish to press charges against his former wife, giving her a greater chance of release.
Lebanese authorities believe Channel Nine paid for the scheme, for which nine people are now under scrutiny, five of them are Australian.
UNSW students filmed chanting sexist song lyrics
Residents of UNSW’s Baxter College have been filmed chanting sexist, vulgar song lyrics during a recent boys’ night out. The call-and-answer-style song, aimed at demeaning women, includes lyrics which glorify sexism and rape: “I wish that all the ladies were little red foxes and if I was a hunter I’d shoot them in their boxes.” James Dunn, treasurer of the college, has admitted to his involvement in the incident, and condemned his own actions as “pretty appalling”. UNSW students have organised protests against the incident and the Student Representative Council has also spoken out with women’s officer, Jocelyn Dracakis, claiming that similar situations are not uncommon.
