Thousands gathered in major Australian cities over the weekend to highlight the plight of abused children at Don Dale and other youth prisons.
The Newsroom attended the rally in Sydney on Saturday, held in conjunction with others in Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Darwin.
Members of the indigenous community were joined by others seeking action over the mistreatment of children in custody, including those at the Northern Territory’s Don Dale detention centre, as reported on ABC’s Four Corners program last Monday.
The disturbing images of child abuse at the centre prompted a Royal Commission into the detention of children in the NT.
The Sydney rally began at Town Hall and progressed through the CBD to Sydney Parliament House via the Supreme Court in Elizabeth Street.
Speakers included Grandmothers Against Removals, the Socialist Alliance and victims of Indigenous brutality.
