A Facebook campaign is under way to lobby the Victorian Government to make the Friday before the AFL Grand Final a public holiday.
Daniel Andrews, the leader of the State opposition, believes the new holiday would be a fitting way to recognise the significance of the game, but this is not the first time the opposition has come out in support of a September public holiday.
The latest call comes ahead of tomorrow’s clash between Hawthorn and Sydney at the MCG.
“The Friday before the Grand Final is a huge event on the footy calendar and is an event that most hard working Victorians don’t get a chance to share,” said Mr Andrews.
Victoria now has 11 public holidays every calendar year, including Melbourne Cup day. (NSW has 12.)
Treasurer Michael O’Brien has estimated that lost productivity due to an extra public holiday would cost the economy about $1.6 billion. He dismissed the idea of an extra was “economically reckless”. – Bianca Souter
