Jarryd Hayne’s NFL dreams are in tatters after being waived from the San Francisco 49ers 53-man-squad this morning.
The 27-year-old running back joined the club in March this year and survived the pre-season cuts to make the initial roster.
The former rugby league superstar earned many plaudits for his performances in pre-season and went on to make six appearances. However, Hayne struggled in the regular season and was dropped to the bench in last week’s 20-3 defeat to the Seattle Seahawks.
An injury to Carlos Hyde saw an opportunity for Hayne to get back into the team but coach Jim Tomsula instead chose to promote Kendall Gaskins from the practice squad, signalling the end for Western Sydney born player.
Hayne’s career in the NFL is not completely over. Other sides have the opportunity to add him to their roster or the 49ers could move him to their practice squad and he is remaining optimistic about his future, tweeting: “Blessed for another test. Thanks for the love TW. Wish my guys all the best against the Rams. If nothing happens I’ll be back Tuesday”. – Chris Matthews-Darby
