Luis Suarez has been banned from any football-related activities for four months for biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini.
Suarez will also miss nine international matches for his country Uruguay, including Saturday’s vital round 16 clash against Colombia.
The Liverpool striker is coming off his best season to date, scoring 31 goals in 33 matches as he helped the Premier League side return to the UEFA Champions League for the first time since 2009-10.
However, repeat offences earned the ire of FIFA who also banned the Uruguayan from attending any matches or training sessions during his suspension. The 2013-14 PFA Player of the Year will miss Liverpool’s first nine Premier League matches and three Champions League matches.
Suarez, who joined the club in January 2011, has already missed 18 games through suspensions including biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic in April 2013.
Liverpool CEO Ian Ayre wrote on the club’s official website that they will wait until the FIFA Disciplinary Committee report before making any comment regarding the matter.
