A man has been shot dead in Sydney’s inner west on Railway Street, Petersham at around 11pm on Tuesday night.
Paramedics attempted to revive the 44-year-old man, who died at the scene.
A woman who phoned emergency services said she heard a series of shots before seeing the man lying on the footpath.
Witnesses said they saw a person flee the scene on a motorbike towards Parramatta Rd.
“I just heard a big bang bang … I got scared and ducked down,” witness Helen told an ABC reporter.
“They ran away then hopped on a black motorbike,” she said.
Acting Superintendant Alf Sergi from the Marrickville Local Area Command said it is too early to speculate if it was a targeted attack.
“At this stage he is not connected with outlaw motorcycle gangs but we can’t discount it,” he said.
Detectives from the Marrickville local area command have urged anyone who saw or heard any suspicious activity on Railway Street on Tuesday night to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit the Crime Stoppers online reporting page. – Jessica Ankomah
