Convicted drug smuggler Schapelle Corby has been granted parole.
The Indonesian Justice Minister, Amir Syamsuddin, announced at a press conference this evening that 1,291 parole applications had been processed. After some initial confusion, it was revealed that Corby’s was among those approved.
Her release date is still unknown, as it could not be processed after 5pm Bali time. It seems she will spend this weekend in jail and be released into her sister’s custody on Monday.
Corby has served more than nine years of a 20-year sentence for smuggling marijuana into Indonesia, which frequently imposes the death penalty on drug smugglers. – Lyndon Hall
