The creativity of staff and students shone brightly on the walls of Macleay College this past week.
Art On Walls is a community project which was coordinated by advertising lecturer Jason Gemenis and advertising program leader Ian Thomson. The project invited faculty staff, administration staff and students to submit a photograph paired with an educational quote to hang on the walls of Macleay College.
There were 61 entries in total. “This was the first time we have ever run this college community photographic project. But we are blown away by the number and quality of the entries,” Mr Thomson told The Newsroom.
Along with Mr Thomson and Mr Gemenis, Student Representative Council members Patricia Tamayo and Sarah Zaait and college administrative staff Shannon Sweeney sat on the judging panel.
“The judging committee selected images that worked most effectively with the selected quote,” Mr Thomson said.
From images of the Opera House, to the Grand Canyon in the USA, eight winners were chosen: Rebecca Hopper, Mohammad Rassa, Gemma Cunliffe, Katie Gow, Manny Aston, Amy Miller, Adriana Kind and Julieann Brooker.
“I think the project was a great idea, it got people in touch with their creative side and now our school’s walls are decorated with our art,” Miss Hopper said.
“It was a surprise to be one of the winners. There was so many great photographs and I didn’t realise how many people submitted an image so to be one of eight winners out of 61 is a pretty amazing feeling,” she added.
Mr Thomson told The Newsroom “There is a spirit: or adventure, of creativity of academic rigour – that has been brilliantly portrayed through the Art On Walls project.
“It is a community of vibrant and talented people, both in the student body, the teaching staff and the administrative employees.”
Mr Thomson said he hopes to make the project an annual event as there are “many more walls to be filled”. – Bianca Mureddu
